Definitions

Accountability Partner: Either at the beginning of the game or via an action card, each player will at some point have an accountability partner. They drink whenever you drink. This connection is nullified during a Season of Pruning.

Martha: The one running around making sure all the things are working

The King of Kings Cup: A shot glass of holy spirit

The Sipping Cup: The cup you…sip…from… What you sip whenever you “take a drink”.

Sword Drill: Players hold their bible above their heads with one hand (think Moses parting the red sea). Martha chooses a verse, reads it twice, then counts down…“3, 2, 1…draw!” Once she says draw, the first person to find AND read aloud the entire verse is the winner.

Set-Up

To play Take This Cup (TTC) in any setting, each player will need:
  1. A Bible (yep, dig it up and dust it off)
  2. A beverage to fill your Sipping Cup
  3. A shot glass to make The King of Kings cup, filled with spirits
  4. Choose an Accountability Partner (only one per person to start. The odd man out must join a three person accountability…commune)
To play TTC with a physical deck, you’ll need:

A time machine

To play TTC online, you’ll need to:

Figure out who’s the Martha among you, then have them:

  1. Create a Google Hangout and invite each of you
  2. Create and share a Google Doc
  3. Log in to playingcards.io  and set up a game
  4. Assign each person a sequential number
  5. Pull up the Cheat Sheet  to handle impending disputes

The rest of you will need to:

  1. Not be such jerks and help next time
  2. Follow Martha’s instructions
    1. Join the Google Hangout
    2. Log in to Playingcards.io with the room code
    3. Open the Google Doc (for entering answers to certain cards)

Gameplay

To play TTC online, you’ll need to:
We recommend between 4 and 13 players, with the number of rounds of gameplay adjusted accordingly. But choose your own adventure.

12 Players: 5 rounds

10 Players: 6 rounds

6 Players: 10 rounds

4 Players: 15 rounds

Heads Up: For some cards, you may need information that might be difficult to recall in your hedonistic, drunken, sinful, unholy state. Given our experience in this fallen world, we have provided a cheat sheet for easy reference.

Each round of gameplay begins with Martha and proceeds clockwise, as God intended.

Each round opens with a Sword Drill initiated by Martha. Everyone besides the winner takes a drink and the round begins.

Card Instructions

Actions: Follow the instructions on the card.  The effects of each last for the rest of the game, unless overridden temporarily by another card or disposed of in a Season of Pruning.

Indulgences: These cards can be used to get out of having to drink from your sipping cup. However, it will take three indulgences to get out of taking the shot should you pull the Take This Cup card. You are not required to use them. Each player may only hold up to 3 indulgences. Should a player pull a fourth indulgence card, they must give it to Martha. If she already has 3, it goes into the discard pile. Warning: when a Martin Luther card is pulled, all indulgences in play are placed in the discard pile and the player holding them must take one drink for each one in their possession at the time the card was drawn.

Lists: Beginning with the player who pulls a list card and continuing clockwise, each player must continue to name items in that category. The card itself will determine whether or not items must be named in sequential order. Should a player 1) name an item incorrectly, 2) name an item out of order when required to, 3) hesitate for more than 5 seconds, they must take a drink. Martha will be the final judge should a dispute arise.

Big “But” Verses and other cards requiring write-in answers: For cards requiring players to write in an answer, the Google Document Martha created will be used to collect answers. The player who pulls the card will close their eyes as the others input their answer to the prompt. Martha will inform that player to open their eyes once 1) all answers have been submitted and 2) each player has moved their icon to the top of the screen. If Martha pulled the original card, the player to her right will do the honor.

Confessional: The player who draws this card will have 60 seconds to think of 3 confessions about themselves: two that are true, and one that is a falsehood from the pits of hell. Once they are ready or time runs out, they will confess their sins to the group, beginning each confession with “Forgive me Father, for I have sinned.” Once all three confessions are heard, they will pause appropriately, then restate each one a second time. During this second round, each other player will cross themselves after hearing the one they think is a falsehood. Those who incorrectly identify the falsehood or do not answer during this second round of confessions will take a drink.

I See That Hand: The last person to raise their hand after someone reads this card must drink.

Accountability Partner: Each player will start the game with an accountability partner. Should this relationship be broken during a Season of Pruning, only renewed connections will be honored.

WWJD: The player who pulls this card comes up with a scenario and two possible outcomes/choices for Jesus to make. The group votes simultaneously by holding up either one or two fingers. If everyone chooses the same outcome, the player who pulled the card drinks. If most of the players choose one option over another, those in the majority must drink. If there is a tie, vote again.
